Successful project at Gate Terminal

Gate terminal is the LNG hub of Europe and plays an essential role in the natural gas supply of the Netherlands and Northwest Europe. Located on the Maasvlakte in Rotterdam, the terminal is optimally accessible for LNG ships. With a current throughput capacity of 12 billion m³ per year, the terminal receives and distributes liquefied natural gas through the gas network to industries and households.
Spectacular feat of innovative engineering
ALTRAD collaborated on the construction of the terminal' 4th LNG storage tank this year.
As with ALTRAD, safety is of high importance to the customer, so our engineering team was under high pressure. The calculations for the scaffolding structures had to be validated several times to prove that the gigantic weight of the steel roof could be accommodated.
The project was carried out by our team in a number of phases
- Tower scaffolding: A square tower scaffolding surrounding a crane to support the steel structure of the 'floating roof'.
- Inside scaffolding: Circular, freestanding scaffolding inside the tank to construct the floating roof.
- Outer scaffolding: Circular scaffolding around the outside of the tank to create the formwork for the concrete outer wall.
Diversity of services became a major asset
Even though ALTRAD had previously been involved in the construction of the previous tanks, this project revisited our service offerings.
So why did we score? “During the tender process, ALTRAD proved to be the most proactive player. The personal contact set the right tone and the package of services did the rest,” says Etienne Méar, Entrepose project director. “For me, it was important to place different aspects of the construction with as few partners as possible because that saved us a lot of time. Also, the fact that we had a technical expert (SPOC) at ALTRAD facilitated the process.”
“Our own engineers and technicians were delighted with the good overall coordination during this project and we see very many future possibilities in the cooperation with ALTRAD. And that not only for scaffolding, but also for the other disciplines.”, Etienne adds.
Success through good cooperation
Jeroen Van As (sales manager): “ Additional assignments assigned to us after the start in May, such as the installation of nets and stair towers, were carried out quickly and effectively.
The excellent cooperation between the different divisions of ALTRAD made this project a great success. Thanks to good internal coordination, the project was completedon time and with high customer satisfaction. ”
