Adaptation of insulation legislation in the Netherlands
From 1 January 2023, the Netherlands has made some changes in terms of insulation guidelines. More information via:

Manufacturing companies use electricity and/or natural gas and are required by the government to conduct an energy-saving investigation. The research obligation is linked to the energy-saving obligation in the Decree on Activities in the Living Environment and applies to energy-saving measures with a payback period of 5 years or less.

- Thermographic investigation
Heat or cold loss often occurs unnoticed in existing insulation systems. This is usually due to:
- Damaged or non-contiguous insulation (e.g. indentation by walking on pipes, open seams)
- Interrupted or wet insulation (heat/cold bridges)
- Non-insulated flanges, pipe sections or fittings
- Failure to apply correct insulation thickness or materials
The advantage of industrial thermography is that we can map plant components of a plant, e.g. pipes/reactors/tanks/heat exchangers, and see where plants are losing heat energy, without switching these plants off. So the camera does not need to be in contact with the object whose temperature you want to measure. We can make a thermogram for steam, gas and electrical installations, optimising energy management better than ever!
An Altrad Services-certified engineer carries out this study and advises on optimisation of the insulation system and on the payback period of the investment.
2. Thermal and acoustic insulation
Benefits of high-quality thermal and acoustic insulation can include:
- Energy savings
- Lower CO2 emissions
- Increased safety (contact hazard)
- Reduced noise pollution.

3. Financial benefit / payback period
Even for companies with good internal quality control, insulation analysis is cost-effective. Once the recommended cost-effective insulation improvements have been carried out, the payback period of these insulation improvements -including the cost of inspection- usually becomes less than 2 years.
When non-insulated parts of plants and pipes with high medium temperatures are insulated, the costs are even recovered within a few months. With investments in energy-efficient insulation and mist the conditions are met, companies are eligible for the Energy Investment Deduction, which provides an average benefit of 13.5%.
