ALTRAD and Avantium together in pioneering project for sustainable biochemistry

An impressive new project is nearing completion in Delfzijl, the Netherlands: the construction of a plant for Avantium, a frontrunner in renewable and sustainable biochemistry. This sustainable initiative contributes to the development of bio-based plastics, which replace traditional fossil raw materials. For ALTRAD, responsible for scaffolding, tracing, insulation and painting works, among others, this is a first-of-its-kind project.

A first for everyone

‘This is a flagship plant because it is the1st bioplastic plant in the region.’ says Jos Pelzer, project manager at ALTRAD. ‘The construction is now almost finished and soon Avantium will start testing. After that, the production process can be started.’ The first piles went into the ground as early as April 2022, and with completion in sight, ALTRAD can proudly look back on a smooth process.

Efficiency and safety go hand in hand

ALTRAD took a phased approach to ensure that the work, including erecting scaffolding and carrying out insulation and painting work, proceeded efficiently. This avoided the need for large peaks in manpower. However, safety was key, stresses Jos Pelzer: ‘The challenge was mainly in the planning. We made efforts to work efficiently yet safely, taking into account the weather conditions. The plant is located on the coast and everything had to withstand salty influences.’

Cooperation and Flexibility

Piet Coenraads, construction manager for Avantium, praises the cooperation with the ALTRAD team: ‘Jos and I have a good rapport. He has a pragmatic approach and knows how to meet deadlines every time. That service, combined with concern for safety and quality, gives us great comfort in project planning. Despite the challenges, such as the impact of the war in Ukraine on the availability of materials, ALTRAD has shown flexibility.’

Jack Noot, Region Manager North at ALTRAD, added: ‘As a market leader in the Eemshaven/Delfzijl region, we have multiple orders with larger and smaller volumes. This size allows us to ensure continuity at Avantium and other customers. The combination of craftsmanship and service orientation shows that cooperation pays off and results in a safe outcome.

Contribution to sustainability

This project fits perfectly with ALTRAD's commitment to sustainability. Avantium's plant will contribute to the production of PEF, a 100% plant-based and recyclable plastic that can be used in various industries, such as packaging and textiles. ALTRAD plays a key role in this through their contribution to the construction of this plant. Thanks to projects like this, the road to a circular and sustainable economy is becoming increasingly paved.

‘Congrats to all the ALTRAD team,’ concludes Jack Noot with satisfaction.
